Scholarships

Since it’s inception, the Kansuiryu scholarship plan has enabled many Australian students to visit Japan for two weeks of training, cultural experience and competition in the World Kansuiryu Full Contact Karate Championships. The scholarships are made possible through the generosity of our sponsors in Japan.

Candidates for the scholarships are determined upon the criteria of consistency and attitude at training and contributions towards the furthering of Kansuiryu Karate in Australia. Nominees must have attained their green belt. The scholarship covers airfares to and from Japan, accommodation and living costs (excluding lunches) and a generous contribution towards cultural attractions and entertainment. Up to ten places are made available each year.

During their stay in Japan students train at local Kansuiryu dojos, visit significant cultural sites and recreational centres, compete in the Kansuiryu World Championships and, of course, shop. They are also subjected to an almost overwhelming degree of Japanese hospitality. Nobody who has visited Japan can doubt that the Japanese play as hard as they train – although they don’t always tell you what you are eating!

While all recipients are required to compete in the Kansuiryu Championships, the scholarship scheme does not apply only to elite fighters. Reflecting the fact that competition is only one aspect of karate, scholarships are awarded at least as much for overall attitude as outright fighting ability. In short, anyone who trains hard and commits himself or herself to Kansuiryu Karate can reasonably aspire to visit Japan.
