KANSUIRYU KARATE IN AUSTRALIA

Kansuiryu Karate was introduced to Australia when Yukinori Moriyama, 7th Dan, arrived in Cairns in 1995 and began teaching in a sublet area of the Cairns Youth Centre at 129 Mulgrave Road. Membership at the new dojo grew steadily and in 2001 Moriyama Sensei took over the lease of the hall, allowing him to install equipment and offer extended training hours for adults and children.

Today the Cairns Dojo is a well-equipped training facility offering a weight training area, punching bags, stretching equipment and a large padded floor area. The dojo is open six days a week for adult and children’s sessions and also for less structured periods when students can use the fitness equipment or request instruction in specific aspects of their karate. All training sessions are supervised by Moriyama Sensei.

In 2003 Moriyama Sensei began teaching Kansuiryu Karate at the Koah Hall near Kuranda. The response from the local community encouraged him to extend training to a further evening at the CWA Hall in Kuranda Township.
